Gallery G-77 was first established by owner and director Andrei Mikhilov in 2003 at 77 Fontanka River Embankment in St. Petersburg. The gallery name references its address. It was one of the first galleries in Russia to represent contemporary international artists with a particular focus on Japan, where the gallery’s owner spent more than 10 years. Enryu Kano, Maiko Maeda, Sawako Watanabe, Takuji Shimura and Diana Wong were among the first to have their solo exhibitions in the gallery. In 2010 G-77 invited Izuru Mizutani who became the first Japanese contemporary artist to demonstrate his installation projects in the State Russian Museum. In 2011 Gallery moved to Japan. In November 2014 G-77 opened its new location in Kyoto city centre between Imperial Place and Nijo Castle, in a Japanese old machiya house. The building, which dates from the 19th century, was renovated and designed by gallery art director Irina Chapkis and includes exhibition space as well as private viewing roof which will be used for special projects.
